Blue whales are a very interesting creature. The first fact that makes them so intriguing is the sheer amount that they eat. Did you know that it’s possible for a single blue whale to eat between four and eight tons in a single day? To put that in perspective, an average car weighs between two and three tons. What’s even more incredible about this fact is blue whales eat this huge amount by consuming krill. A single krill only weighs one to two grams. In one pound, there are 453 grams. 2,000 pounds make up a ton. When you start doing that math, it’s almost mind boggling how many krill blue whales can eat in a single day!
When you’re dealing with a creature that is large as a blue whale, it can be hard to truly wrap your head around its size. To give you an idea, just the tongue of a blue whale can be as big as an entire elephant. Since we’ve already used the car for a size comparison, it can also be useful to know that a blue whale’s heart is equivalent in size to a regular car.
Blue whales also have the ability to move very quickly. When they are going at their average pace, they cover around five miles an hour. However, when a blue whale needs to get somewhere, they are able to cover a full twenty miles in just one hour. Speaking of miles, if you were a blue whale, you wouldn’t need a cellphone. The reason is because they can communicate with each other over a span of one thousand miles!

The blue whales are a very majestic creature of the deep that have been around for as long as the dinosaurs where roaming the earth. Unfortunately over the last few centuries the blue whales have been hunted nearly to complete extinction and now the populations are struggling to resize. With Japanese whaling fleets still looking for whale to catch for experiments and whale blubber there is still a chance that the blue whales will not make another century on this planet.
It is possible that the blue whales are getting close to extinction because of their giant size and this makes them and easy target. With the modern Japanese whaling ships they can easily outrun the blue whales so there is little chance of escape. The dwindling numbers from 200,000 blue whales around 200 years ago down to just a hand full of blue whales is a major worry for animal activists who have little chance in reviving this species.
The blue whales where commonly spotted in all the oceans of the world however today they are only present in a few, if seen at all. In 1931 it was estimated that nearly 30.000 blue whales where killed for their meat all around the world however it was not until 1966 that the whales where declared to be on the endangered species list by the international whaling commission. Today it is only one nation that hunts the whales however the Japanese government assure us that the whaling fleets will not target endangered species of whales.

Besides giving the obvious answer that blue whales live in the ocean there is a more complex answer for you to think about. Lucky for the blue whale being nearly 20 times larger than the biggest of elephants and 10 times larger than the scary tyrannosaurus rex the blue whale never had to worry about being hunted y man because they were just to big and fast to catch. These whales spend a lot of time moving north to south and then south to north following the food they eat and keeping in waters which are the perfect temperature for them to live in.
It is the cooler temperatures that the blue whales like such as far north around Iceland and Norway and around the coast of Ireland. The Atlantic Ocean is where these majestic mammals of the deep love to live, feed and breed because the water temperature there is perfect for a mammal that has dozens if not hundreds of tones of blubber around its body. The blue whales are capable of traveling thousands of kilometers so you can also find them in the warmer Pacific Ocean. The blue whale just like many other whale species are mainly comprised of blubber and it is not unusual to see them alongside an iceberg which shows just how effective their natural insulation can be.
Unfortunately for the blue whale their habitats are becoming less which is a problem for something of such a great size. With the melting of the ice caps the fresh water that is running off into the ocean means that the whales have to stay away from this land mass otherwise they will drown in themselves in the freshwater which they cannot breath. Blue whales can also be found further north as far as the equator around America and off the coast of Africa which is where they need to go to feed during the colder seasons.

The blue whale is the largest mammal on Earth today. For this reason, it has sparked the interest of many and has lead to a great deal of fascinating inquiries in questions. One of the first questions that comes to mind when considering the blue whale is what do blue whales eat? It is difficult to imagine the diet of such a massive animal, yet the answer to that question may be surprising.
Although the blue whale is a large animal, the fact of the matter is that it eats the same thing as most other similar creatures. This diet includes krill and small fish. For the blue whale to support its massive size, it must eat a large number of fish. In this particular case, the blue whale will eat four tons of these tiny fish within a single day.
The blue whale does not have any teeth, which would normally make eating problematic for any other animal. This does not prove to be a problem for the blue whale, however. In order to properly eat, the blue whale takes an enormous drink of water. During this process, it extends its pleated throat. It is at this time that the whale will filter out the water while taking all the fish in the path. This filter is done by using the tongue to push out the water while also contracting the throat. In the end, the tiny fish are left as food for the whale while the water is pushed out and away. Within one gulp, thousands of small fish are consumed.

The blue whale is a type of marine mammal that can grow over 100 feet in length and weight about 200 tons. It is the largest animal that has ever been known to exist on Earth and is part of the baleen whale suborder. The diet of the blue whale mostly consists mostly of krill or small fish. In the beginning of the twentieth century, blue whales could be found in any of the oceans and were plentiful. Unfortunately, they have been hunted for forty years nearly down to extinction. They became a protected animal in 1966. In 2002, there is an estimated 5000-12,000 blue whales in existence. Before the occurrence of whaling, there was approximately 239,000 blue whales in the Antarctic alone.
The blue whale has a long and slender body. The head is a flat U-shape and contains a ridge that runs from its blowhole to the top of its upper lip. There are around 300 one-meter long plates that run from its upper jaw back into its mouth and 60-90 that run along the throat. These help the whale in excreting water from the mouth of a large feeding. The blue whale does possess a dorsal fin, but it is small and can only be seen during diving. It is located roughly three-quarters down the body and can vary in shape. When breaking the water’s surface to breathe, the bleu whale will blow out more water than any other whale that shoots between 9 and 12 meters high.

The oceans seem endless and can be very deep and they have a habit of making humans look very insignificant. There are many creatures in the seas which are all beautiful in their own way however there are some that are dangerous to humans while some are very gentle creatures. The Blue Whales are one of these animals that you can find in the deep blue oceans and these particular whales are said to be the biggest animals that have ever existed. The can grow up to 35 meters in length or more and have been in our waters for hundreds of thousands of years. The blue whales are one of the animals that are in danger in the water not from predators but from humans. The Japanese and Norwegian whale hunters go out every year killing any whale they come across which has greatly decreased the number of many whale species.
The Blue Whale is a marine mammal which means that it gives birth to live young and does not lay eggs like other fish species do. All whales give birth to live young otherwise their eggs would be in very big danger because they were so big. These animals are so big that they can weight over 150 tones and a little baby whale that is new born can be four or five times the size of your average car. There are three species of the Blue Whale known from their habitats which are in different oceans for each species. The Indian and South Pacific Oceans hold a species each while the Pacific holds its own whale species. Even though the blue whales are the largest animals on earth they are known to feed of one of the smallest crustations in the sea called krill.
Like all the other fish in the sea the blue whale has a very simple body which consists of a head, body, tail and fins. The bone structure of the whale is relatively like other fish with the main bone being the skull and then a vertebra as well as ribs. Their fins are used to maneuver however the great blue whale takes some time to turn itself around. The breath air out of their blow hole like most other whales which means that they must stay close to the surface. The blue whales can hold their breath for many hours however if they cannot reach the surface because of ice then they will drown like any other air breathing animal. The blue whales only give birth once a year and the offspring has only a fair chance of survival. This is why the population needs to be protected until the numbers of the blue whale increase.
